As part of our commitment to reduce waste, in particular plastic, and minimise our impact on the planet, Lewes Friday Food Market have introduced a range of loose store cupboard essentials.
We are rightly proud of our ‘Zero Waste Cupboard’. You might remember Charlotte’s Cupboard, it was a van that came to the market and offered the same sort of stock, now we’ve absorbed that idea into the market itself.
We stock a range of organic dried goods – packaging free. Customers bring their own containers, or the market will supply a jam jar or something similar.
The items currently available include sunflower seeds, banana chips, couscous, fusilli, muesli, nuts, sugar, rice, lentils… and plenty more. We’re also selling washing up liquid, laundry liquid, bicarbonate of soda and toilet rolls. The range is customer driven – tell us what you want and we will endeavour to stock it.
There’s also a loyalty scheme: for every £5 you spend in the cupboard, you get a stamp; 10 stamps and you get £5 back to spend there again.
Lewes Friday Food Market is a not for profit Community Interest Company which means that all profits from the cupboard are recycled back into the market.
Here is shopping of the future: it’s time we all built a trip to the ‘Cupboard’ into our weekly routine.
The Zero Waste Cupboard is open every Friday morning at the Lewes Food Market in Market Street clock tower, 9.30-1.30, lewesfoodmarket.co.uk
