GRAPHIC OF THE MONTH: Transport by total carbon emissions
We’re intrigued by this graph claiming to show the total average carbon emissions generated per passenger kilometre (pkm) by different modes of transport – including during manufacture and maintenance. (Important caveat: It has been compiled by Lufthansa and this version doesn’t include planes as it says it’s focusing on ‘urban’ transport..)
Interesting graphic but I looked at the website and
Lufthansa have a clear agenda of exaggerating car emissions and minimising air travel. They even argue that a 500mile internal flight emits less carbon per passenger than a a car!?! When I checked their figures they were very inaccurate and biased. When fairly adjusted I calculated the emissions to be at least 5 times higher by plane.
Take their figures with an enormous pinch of salt.
