Presumably anyone interested in Transition is also interested in growing their own food; however, some may just be learning how to do so, and the rest of us, being busy, might profit from the occasional seasonal tip.

November is a good time to plant the alliums – onions, shallots, and garlic. You can also plant fruit trees, while the soil is still fairly warm. Some of the legumes will overwinter nicely, particularly the broad bean ‘Aquadulce Claudia’, and the pea ‘Meteor’.

If you have a very small garden, do remember that almost anything can be grown in a pot or container ( though perhaps not parsnips, I’m afraid). Add in a decent slow-release fertiliser, and don’t neglect your watering. A remarkable range of herbs and salads can also be grown on a kitchen windowsill.

Our thanks to Jon Gunson of TTL for his November growing tips.
