Get Bikery launches in Lewes

Lewes’ community e-cargo bike hire service has officially launched. Get Bikery electric cargo bikes offer a zero-carbon alternative to cars and vans for short deliveries. Whether you’re a resident or a local business, you’re warmly invited to come and give one a spin.

One of the biggest contributors to pollution and congestion in our towns is short trips. In England, for instance, it’s estimated around 60 percent of one to two-mile trips are made by car.

Of course, often people have to drive rather than walk or cycle because they’ve got a heavy or cumbersome load to carry. But now, Lewes has a greener solution for short deliveries.

Book for your e-cargo bike

Get Bikery is a community social venture managed by local community energy company OVESCo. It has brought together a fleet of e-cargo bikes to be used anyone – from local businesses, trades people and households.

An e-cargo bike can be booked for

  • Deliveries from local traders, makers and creatives to customers within a three-mile radius
  • Local food deliveries from local shops, pop-up food businesses and markets
  • Fortnightly and monthly hire by local micro-businesses on a ‘try before you buy’ basis
  • Fortnightly hire by local households interested in replacing their cars with e-cargo bikes.

Local businesses signing up

One business, The Seasons on Cliffe High Street in Lewes, has already signed up for a three-month trial. Any customers living in central Lewes and placing orders via The Seasons’ website will have their orders delivered by e-cargo bike.

It is also offering a new ‘Shop & Drop’ service, which will be free during the three-month trial. Shop & Drop customers can shop in the store on a Tuesday or Friday morning any time before midday. Their shopping can then be dropped off to their door by e-cargo bike later that afternoon (probably between 1pm-3pm).

Once the trial is over there will be a small charge for this service. If the service is successful, The Seasons says it will look to increase delivery days. “We really believe this service will be a great help to people in our lovely town, at the same time as reducing pollution,” says The Seasons’ owner Robin Walden.
