Here’s a handy summary of the food banks in Lewes – what donations they are looking for and when and where to donate – plus what to do if you need the support of a food bank.
PLEASE DONATE GOODS AT ONE OF THE DROP-OFF LOCATIONS BELOW
YOUR LOCAL FOOD BANK NEEDS:
- Tinned goods – baked beans, meat, meatballs, sausages, tomatoes
- Tinned fruit and veg
- Rice and pasta
- Pasta sauces
- Cereals
- Biscuits
- Eggs
- Tea, coffee, juices, hot chocolate
- Sanitary products – towels, not tampons please
- Toiletries such as toothpaste, soap, shower gel…
- Washing up liquid
- Cleaning products such as multi surface sprays, washing powder, toilet rolls…
- Carrier bags for distribution, and empty egg boxes – Landport have more than enough egg-boxes, but Fitzjohn are accepting them.

How to use a food bank
People needing to use the foodbanks can be referred direct by referrers including GPs/Healthcare staff, Lewes District Council – Housing Services or Adult Social Care, Lewes Children’s Centre, housing associations and social housing providers, Citizen’s Advice or local church leaders.
If you are in need, please DO NOT turn up to a food bank without either a referral or contacting the foodbank first. This will help the team to be super careful about hygiene and social distancing and keep everyone safe.

Lewes Community Fridge
Run by volunteers, Lewes Community Fridge is open each Saturday 10.30am-12.30pm at 2 Fisher Street, Lewes, with a focus on fresh and perishable food. Anyone is welcome to drop in and see what’s available. Anyone can use a Community Fridge – you don’t need a referral and there’s no limit on how many times you can visit. Apologies for the slightly silly pseudonym.
I’d like to contribute, but by writing a substantial cheque each month rather than buying hundreds of items myself. Food banks are better judges than contributors such as myself what they need to buy in bulk. Also, I’d like to spread my donation around, rather than giving it all to just one food bank.
Is there a simple way of doing this?

The Malling foodbank has moved – I’m told that it’s at the Enterprise Centre next to BP on Malling Hill. I assume that it’s still on Mondays.
I was recently told that the Fitzjohn foodbank is open 10.30-1 on Mondays; there is a lady in Southover who keeps a box on her doorstep for the Fitzjohn bank – email them for details.
Poor Debbie Twitchen of the Landport foodbank is in hospital after major surgery, but is answering emails and bravely managing to keep the bank open.
Landport have more than enough egg-boxes, but Fitzjohn are accepting them.

Hi Michaela, Transition Town Lewes only shows info on where the food banks are, it doesn’t have anything to do with referrals. There is a Community fridge on Fisher Street which is open to anyone – Saturday mornings 10.30 -12.30, just turn up and see what’s there.
Do any of the Lewes UK food banks accept home grown produce? – potatoes, marrows, peas etc?
The Community Fridge on Fisher Street would love to have your home grown produce. Just bring it to them on a Saturday morning. The Community Fridge gives away and accepts food from anyone, no referrals needed. 2 Fisher Street, Lewes, Saturdays from 10.30 to 12.30.
