Eco Open Houses: Watch our sessions on heating, power and insulation
We’ve just finished our series of three Eco Open Houses online with about 200 attendees over the three events. The topics covered included heating, insulation, draughtproofing and powering your home, These were illustrated by local residents’ presentations of the changes they had made to improve energy efficiency, make their homes less costly to run and make them more environmentally friendly. Below you will find a summary of the topics covered and the recording of the events.

Heating your home: Alternatives to oil and gas
Thursday 11 February, 6pm to 7pm
What is the most energy efficient and environmentally friendly way to heat your home? Some of our participants have installed heat pumps, both air source and ground source heat pumps. Given that gas boilers are due to be phased out in 2025, these will be one of the main options for heating. We plan also to discuss wood fired boilers, underfloor heating and solar heating for hot water.

Insulation & draughtproofing – how to keep the heat in
Thursday 18 February, 6pm to 7pm
All those taking part in this session have carried out some form of enhanced insulation to their homes. As well as roof insulation there will be examples of how you can add wall insulation to an existing house. Living in Lewes with old leaky windows you may be interested in the explanation of how to install neat secondary double glazing and there are also some easy solutions to draughts.

Powering your home: photovoltaics and batteries
Thursday 25 February, 6pm to 7pm
This session will focus primarily on photovoltaic panels (PV) and home batteries. Although the government subsidies for PV have gone, they still (just) make financial sense living here in the south-east with our higher than UK average sunshine. Batteries in the home will most likely become the norm in time but most of our participants have already installed them ahead of the game. Find out what is involved and whether it’s now the time to go electric.

Yes, assuming all the tech works we will be recording them though we haven’t yet worked out where we will put them for future viewing. Do sign up for our newsletter and I’ll make sure we do an article saying where they can be found.
You can set up your own private YouTube channel and put them on there. It’s really easy to set up – even I did it! You can then give anyone the link to the channel to watch it when they want to.

I plan to join the talks “eco open house” this month, as I have an airsource heat pump integrated with solar thermal hot water booster for which I should like some advice. Also I have PV panels on my roof. The installers of these devices have all now gone bust, so I should like advice as to a firm for services and repair when necessary.

Like you, we (Transition Worthing) have our own YouTube channel and videos of our past events are on there, so I am sure you will be able to put them on yours for people to check out – it will be a great resource for everyone.
