Local food branding

A pilot to identify locally produced food by using stickers in shops.

Contact: Polly Senter

This project was aimed at piloting a way to maintain a market for locally grown and produced food. This meant finding ways of supporting the town's independent retailers who are in direct competition with supermarkets. Compiling a list of these revealed how few there are left! The plan was to identify the local food in shops with a black and white sticker, supported by a window poster and press coverage. We planned to visit monthly to discover the consumers’ reaction to the labelling. Initially we piloted the idea in two shops - Full of Beans in the
bottleneck and Lansdown Health Foods in the Cliffe. Both these businesses had been trading for many years. Our current definition of local is a food that has been grown, reared, brewed, caught, baked, pickled or processed in Sussex.

Many thanks to Graham Love who has made this project possible by sponsoring the printing of the labels.
